Continuing down the King's Highway, we arrive at the "four
corners" which is the cross-roads of the King's Highway, East Side Drive and the
Darky Town Road (named after "Darky" Mike O'Donnell, a black Irishman - check
your history books for the black Irish and the Spanish Armada).
The East Side Drive was originally named the "Trail Road" and only went, as a wagon trail, from this spot to what is called "Mike Boyle's Beach", which is the beginning of Big Sand Bay. In 1937 a W. P. A. project changed this from a wagon trail to an actual road. The East Side Drive now goes all the way down the island to the South Head Lighthouse. |
